In Juli last year (2023) Menno and I (Karel) decided to go fly fishing for baby tarpon. After some discussions back and forth about how long (number of days and what period) we made a decision in August that same year. May 2024 and 8 days of fly fishing was our goal.
To organize our fly fishing trip, we contacted Theo Huizing former owner of Tropical Flyfishing agency. Theo wanted to help us organize this fly fishing trip.
San Felipe Mexico was our destination. The second time for Menno and the third time for me. The accommodation address " Mena Fly Fishing Lodge " formerly Tarpon Cay Lodge and we had a good experience with this lodge.
Theo had organized the trip very well and had contact with Javi, the contact person at Mena Fly Fishing. Communication with Javi was perfect ( by app and mail ). Before our departure from the Netherlands Javi sent us some practical tips and where he would meet us for tramsport to the hotel. After picking up at the at the agreed location and a short stop, we drove into San Felipe after about 3 hours drive.
A warm welcome to the hotel with a festive cocktail. It feels like coming home for Menno and me. After the delicious hot meal, made of fresh ingredients, we meet our fish guide " Carlos Can ". Rods are prepared and our flies are selected. After discussing breakfast, we go to bed tired but satisfied.
Our hotelroom is spacious and large, air-conditioned with beautiful vieuws over the sea. The next morning at breakfast, nothing is missing. Lovely fresh fruit and toast etc. Then onto the water. Carlos is already waiting for us and we are a bit nervous , what can we expect from our guide and the fishing.
Carlos turns out to be a top guide. Finding the tarpon and boat control is phenomenal. The shared day from 6am to 11.30am then back for lunch and free time, then fishing again from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. We find this day schedule very enjoyable, also because of the climate. The fishing is great, we catch a lot of tarpons and so many bites. The stay in the hotel is great. The staff is very willing to help you and the food is excellent, especially the authentic Mexican dishes.
Menno and I had a great week here. Thanks to Javi and Theo for their communication and organization. Thanks to Carlos for the fine fishing moments. But also thanks to Nathalie and her staff who gave us an extraordinary stay.

Been coming here 4 years. We are treated like family, and you will be treated that way as well.
The tarpon trips have never ceased to be great. Even when slows the guides find a way to provide shots at fish. The guides know the waters and the ecology amazing well resulting in successful days on the water.
Great bird life with multiple species.

Javi was very communicative throughout the planning process, answering every email.
Helped about gear, flies, best days to visit.
We fished 5 days with our guide Carlos, which knew the best spots and had a great energy.
Food was amazing and the best is the people taking care of us the whole time (front desk, cooking, house keeping)
Would definetly recommend.

My wife and I spent 4 days fly fishing for Tarpon (our second visit) with Mena Fly Fishing at Hotel San Felipe de Jesus in mid-August of 2022. This is one of our most favorite trips and fisheries in the Yucatan, with a top-notch small family-run business.
What makes fly fishing with Mena so special? From top to bottom this is a first-class well-run operation. Beginning with safe, easy, convenient pick-up and return to Cancun airport or Merida. Upon arrival the staff meet you at the door with welcome margaritas, introduce themselves and review your schedule. We just can’t say enough about the schedule! Appreciated the early morning start and mid-day break for lunch and siesta. Very comfortable, clean, updated rooms decorated with artwork from Don Jesus Mena. A perfect way to take a piece of this great experience home with you. The hotel sits right on the docks with views of the beautiful ocean sunrises and sunsets.
The guides Carlos, Pedro and Carlos are excellent. They speak good English, know the water, are good at spotting Tarpon and can put you on the fish. The fishing was sometimes challenging but Tarpon were plentiful and you had lots of shots at them.
All meals are provided in the hotel dining room and you will not find any better. Many thanks to the fine culinary skills of Fili and Diana, and the very attentive, accommodating service by all Mena staff. You will not want for anything and the food is exceptional. The location of this sleepy little fishing town is close to Rio Lagartos. It is laid-back and very special, with an abundance of wildlife and of course those beautiful flamingos.
Our trip was great in all ways and we can’t wait to return. Thanks to Jesciel, Natalie, Javier, Mena Fly Fishing and Hotel San Felipe de Jesus for an enjoyable, relaxing and memorable trip. These are some fine folks and everyone is treated like family. We will be back again.
