Where to spot Them. They are mostly seen on warm shallow waters along tropical coastlines, but can also be seen in shallow grass, creeks, river mouths, and canals, which is why lots of fishermen choose to come to Campeche, because it has a vast system of mangrove lagoons and creeks that starts up north and stretches along the coast for more than 120 kilometers, all the way to the little fishing community of Isla Arena, giving the perfect chance to catch young tarpon that can weigh between 6 and 25 pounds.

Campeche Tarpon Season. Since Tarpons are a local fish you can find them all year long, and the key to finding them is catching good weather. The best season is from May to November, you’ll find the most stable weather and lots of nutrients being pushed by the rainfall from the mangrove into the Gulf, creating more tarpon-abundant waters.

Winter months are a little riskier because of cold fronts but can bring the greatest opportunities on the grass flats for finding schools of 20–40 pounders older juveniles.

Campeche is an excellent choice for a fly fishing trip that also offers a wide variety of activities like visiting regional sites, and day trips, an excellent vacation spot for the entire family. And if you’d like to check out some other nearby places to try your luck and catch some more, San Felipe, Yucatan is a lovely town where you’ll find the world’s richest sites for baby tarpon.
