Planning your Yucatan tarpon fishing trip? Understanding the seasons is key to a successful experience. Whether you’re chasing baby tarpon in calm lagoons or hoping to battle a Silver King on the flats, the time of year can shape your adventure — but there’s never really a “bad” time to fish in San Felipe Yucatan.
Peak Season: May to October
This is the prime time for tarpon fly fishing in Yucatan. From late spring through early fall, warm temperatures and calm weather create ideal conditions. This period marks the highest concentration of juvenile tarpon in the estuaries near San Felipe.
- May to July: Excellent for sight fishing juvenile tarpon in shallow, clear waters. Active mornings and evenings, mild winds, and fewer rain showers.
- June to August: The best chance to hook migratory tarpon (also known as the Silver King), sometimes up to 100+ pounds, in coastal ocean flats.
- September to October: Still active waters with reduced crowds, making it perfect for relaxed yet productive fishing days.
Off-Peak & Winter Season: November to April
While considered the “off-season” by some, the cooler months are still well worth the trip, especially for those looking to escape winter snow and enjoy a quiet fishing getaway. Juvenile tarpon remain in the lagoons year-round, and winter brings:
- Calmer winds during early mornings
- Fewer boats on the water — more privacy
- Comfortable temperatures for anglers who prefer milder conditions
- Ideal conditions for combining fishing with relaxation and birdwatching
While larger migratory tarpon are less likely during this season, the baby tarpon still offer exciting and technical fly fishing opportunities. We recommend planning this trip by speaking directly with us, as wind conditions in the area can change unexpectedly.
Why Tarpon Fly Fishing in Winter Still Makes Sense

Add in our comfortable lodge, delicious meals, and personalized service, and it becomes the perfect winter retreat — rod in hand.
Other Species Available Year-Round
