San Felipe Yucatan Hosts Baby Tarpon All Year Long
The combination of its climate and its geological and hydrological characteristics makes San Felipe Yucatan in Mexico one of the most prolific spots of baby tarpon in the world. There is only one Tarpon Capital of the World, and that’s San Felipe. This means that San Felipe hosts baby tarpon from 5 to 20 pounds all year long!
This amazing fishery has been made a marine preserve, shielding this Tarpon “nursery” from industrial fishing and netting. It’s not unusual to see pods of tarpon rolling and cutting bait on the flats on a calm day; it’s an incredible sight, to say the least. Tarpon shares its environment with Snook, Permit, Bonefish, Jack Crevalle and Barracudas.
During July, August, and September and October we get the visit of gigantic tarpon. Silver Kings up to 165 lbs. Indeed, they are not in the mangroves, but they are pretty close to the shore.
