The Best Tarpon Fishing in Mexico

Tarpon is a very peculiar type of fish which can only be found in certain areas of the world. Usually it is found in estuaries and warm tropical weathers and mangroves. Mexico is a very wide country and there are a lot of places that host the Silver King, but there is only one Tarpon Capital of the World, and that’s San Felipe. Tarpon shares his environment with Snook, Permit, Bonefish, Jack Crevalle and Barracudas.

San Felipe Hosts Baby Tarpon All Year Long

The combination of its climate and its geological and hydrological characteristics makes San Felipe Yucatan in Mexico one of the most prolific spots of baby tarpon in the world.

This means that we have baby tarpon from 5 to 20 pounds all year long! Of course along with other species.

This amazing fishery has been made a marine preserve, shielding this Tarpon “nursery” from industrial fishing and netting. The abundance of young tarpon that live in the area is the distinguishing feature of the fishing at Mena Fly Fishing. It’s not unusual to see pods of tarpon rolling and cutting bait on the flats on a calm day; it’s an incredible sight, to say the least.

San Felipe is also the house of the Silver King

During July, August, and September and October we get the visit of gigantic tarpon. Silver Kings up to 165 lbs. Indeed, they are not in the mangroves, but they are pretty close to the shore.

Remember that if you want to try fishing a Silver King, you need to bring a proper rod and line to resist this weight and power.

We have received the visit from legends

San Felipe has been the spotlight of many top-notch fishermen. We hosted Jose Wejebe, The Spanish Fly for his show.

It’s not a secret that San Felipe is the actual Best Tarpon Fishing Spot in Mexico, that’s why some companies use San Felipe in their names to advertise. However, Mena Fly Fishing is the only fishing lodge in San Felipe.
